I went onto the BBC's Test your Pet website and tested Charlie. He scored 28/30. Most dogs score 24/30. Most Cavaliers score 19/30 (don't know how they got that). To go to Test Your Pet, click here!

Good Canine Citizen

Now Charlie has finished his Puppy class, he moves on to the adult class, namely Good Canine Citizen. Charlie has an advantage over most of the other dogs. Well, more than 1.

He knows all the commands already.
He is very food oriented
He is smart
I have more time to train him

I think he should do fairly well in his exam. I hope so!

Kongs for hot days!!!!!!!!!!

This is adapted from the one on the Kong Website.

Put a piece of kibble in the small end (Peanut butter does not work very well)
Use crushed ice (I use the dispenser on the fridge for convenience) to fill to near the top.
Gradually put water in
Place in a platic cup and Freeze for a few hours.
Give to dog outside!!!!!!!!! (Very Messy!!)

Now Charlie is getting older, he is also getting noisier! He will run up to the gates to wag his tail and say woof at any person or dog that comes by!!!!! WOOF WOOF!!!!!!!!!!!!

Charlie is doing well in his training. At the start we do all of the exercises we have covered so far (sit, down, stand, come) before we start on new ones. He did everything perfectly! We did fetch. Charlie will run and chase the toy, but he won't come back. We also started teaching him how to come to heel from sitting at the front. It's a bit complicated, but we'll manage. Woof!!!!!!

Do dogs ears smell?

When i cleaned out Charlie's ears yeaterday, they smelt wierd, so we took him to the vet. We now have ear drops and 1 dose of Revolution, just in case there are any ear mites.

Agility

When I lived in the UK, I would watch Crufts every year. And my favourite part was agility. The Singapore Kennel club does Agility Classes, and once we have the Godd Canine Citizen certificate, I intend to give it a go! I'll have to ask them to lower the jumps, butcan you really expect a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to jump at the same height as a Border Collie? No.

New Year's Resolution

To take Charlie on a good long walk every day.

I instantly regretted this because it is pouring out of the heavens at the moment. When we got back, we were cold (yes, in Singapore) and wet. I gave Charlie bath. He was well behaved, but ran off as I was blow drying him!

Using his Kong

When I first gave him his Kong, I made it easy, thinking he would be amused for at least an hour. But no! He polished it off in under 15 minutes. I have used various ways of making it harder. Here is the way I prepare his.

You need:

Kong (small Kongs can be good for throwing, but you don't get much inside, so I use medium)
Peanut butter
Treats (I use small pieces of apple)
Dog food (I use small pieces to pack tighter)
Dog biscuit

Method

Put some peanut butter in the small hole
I hope you don't mind getting a bit messy! Get a blob of peanut butter and add the treats. Mix it in so you it's evenly spread and sticky. Put this through the large hole and push to the end. It should fill about 1/3 of the cavity.
Now do the same with the dog food to fill the rest of the cavity. But stop just before the rim.
fill it up to the edge with peanut butter, then press the dog biscuit inside.
Give to your dog!
To make it more challenging, put it inside a plastic resealable bag and freeze until needed.

Remember!

The Kong is part of his food ration. The more Kongs he gets through, the less he gets in his evening meal.

Obedience Classes

For advice on issues like chewing, howling and housebreaking & socialisation, as well as lerning to sit, down, stand, come when called etc, we enrolled him in a puppy training class. 1 hour every Sunday afternoon. It's fun, though he tends to get over excited and we don't get that much done. Most of the work is done at home anyway, the trainer showsyou how to do it then you get it done during the week.

Toilet Training

This morning we took Charlie to the vets to get his final jab. No more for 1 year. We also got a starter kit including some free dog food, a dewormer tablet and some tablets to prvent heartworm. We saw a pet shop next door so we got him some more cuddly toys (he adores them), some food, some treats and a puppy kong. He is very sleepy and is not his usual lively self. On the counter, he kept trying to stand up and ending up lying down because his claws are getting long.

Charlie's life so far

Charlie the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was born in Melbourne, Australia on 7/4/2004. He came into Singapore in October, and we bought him on 11/27/04. We took him to the vets on that day for a vaccination. We spent time in various pet shops buying food, toys, etc. We took him to get professionally groomed 2 fridays ago (12/17/04). We weren't happy. On Christmas Day, we gave him a teddy and a ring with squeakers in.
